The Hockey Hounds Major Bantam Hockey Tournament returns to Medicine Hat this weekend for a 47th consecutive showcase of Western Canada’s top upcoming talent.

The tournament consistently draws the eyes of scouts from across the Western Hockey League and often features a grocery list of prospects who go on to hear their names called at the bantam draft.

Delta Academy kicked off their tournament with a 6-1 victory over the Northwest Hawks on Thursday night at Hockey Hounds Arena. Over at the Moose, Pursuit of Excellence topped West Van 8-1, while the Northeast Wolfpack started with a 4-2 win over Edmonton SSAC and the Lethbridge Golden Hawks picked up a 3-0 win over the Sherwood Park Flyers at the Kinplex.

In Thursday’s later games, SEAC battled to a 4-4 tie with the Cariboo Cougars, reigning champion St. George’s defeated the Leduc Oil Kings 8-5, Balgonie topped the Airdrie Xtreme 3-2 and Martensville edged Burnaby Winter Club 4-2.

Here’s a look at a few names jumping off the rosters ahead of this weekend’s action.

Roan Woodward, No. 15, Northeast Wolfpack forward

The Northeast Wolfpack enters the tournament riding a 6-1-0-1 record in the Saskatoon AA Hockey League, and Roan Woodward has been the driving force behind their offence. The 5-foot-8, 136-pound forward has been producing at a staggering pace with 30 points through his first eight games of the season. With 14 goals and 16 assists, Woodward has already passed last season’s totals in both categories and will be one to watch when he hits the ice with the Wolfpack this weekend.

Andrew Cristall, No. 14, St. George’s School forward

St. George’s School will be on the hunt for its third consecutive Hockey Hounds tournament title this weekend. While Andrew Cristall wasn’t around for their 2017 run, he posted six points over five games in last year’s tournament and will likely be a key factor in their push to repeat again this year. The 5-foot-7, 130-pound forward sits ninth in Canadian Sport School Hockey League bantam prep scoring this season with 17 goals and 12 assists through 11 games.

Ben Riche, No. 15, Balgonie Prairie Storm forward

The Balgonie Prairie Storm enter the tournament with an 8-1-0-0 record in the SAAHL thanks to a potent offence led by forward Ben Riche. Standing 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds at 14 years old, Riche is one of the bigger bodies on this list and he’s been using his size to great effect with eight goals and 17 assists through nine games.

Carter Lundie, No. 10, West Van Hockey Academy forward

West Van Hockey Academy boasts a number of prolific scorers to start the season, but Carter Lundie sits atop the team’s scoring race with 23 points in his first 12 games. The 5-foot-6, 130-pound forward leads all CSSHL bantam varsity players with 13 assists and 23 points through his first 12 games, and he’s not the only member of his team vying for the league’s scoring title. Fellow forwards Carson Wetch and Justin Ivanusec sit tied for second in the league with 22 points in 11 games, while Luka Shcherbyna follows up in fifth with 20 points in 12 contests.

Josh Van Mulligen No. 2, South East Athletic Club Tigers defenceman

While the Tigers have struggled to a 3-8-2 start in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League this season, Josh Van Mulligen has still managed to produce just shy of a point per game from the back end. The 6-foot, 169-pound blueliner leads his team with seven goals and 11 points in his first 13 games – and after managing just one goal and 11 points in 33 contests with SEAC last season.

Rylan Pearce, No. 3, Martensville Marauders defenceman

The Martensville Marauders have been bolstered defensively this year by puck-moving blueliner Ryan Pearce. The 5-foot-7, 165-pound playmaker sits ninth among SAAHL defencemen in scoring with 14 points – including a dozen assists – in nine games after producing just 11 in 30 contests last season.

Massimo Urbani, No. 29, Burnaby Winter Club goaltender

The Burnaby Winter Club enters the weekend with one of the hottest goaltending duos at the tournament, led by 12-year-old Massimo Urbani. While Urbani – who turns 13 on Nov. 29 – has only played in four CSSHL games this season, the 5-foot, 108-pound netminder has turned away 83 of the 86 shots he’s faced for a .965 save percentage and a 0.75 goals against average to lead the league in both categories while stringing together a 4-0-0 record. Right behind Urbani, 13-year-old Noah Stenvig is 2-2-0 with a 2.01 GAA and a .925 save percentage.

The Hockey Hounds tournament runs through Sunday at the Kinplex, Moose and Hockey Hounds arenas. Playoff action is set for Saturday, while the championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the Kinplex.
